Monterrey II Project on Abatement of Greenhouse Gases in Waste Management in Mexico. The Project aims at reducing the pollution and greenhouse impact of the Methane that is contributed by the waste disposal in the city of Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, Mexico, either through its capture and use as a fuel for power generation or through flaring.
Specifically, the project will:
a) Strengthen the coordination of sector policies and institutions for effective methane reductions at landfills in Mexico;
b) Replicate the experience and lessons learned at the landfill site and methane power plant in Monterrey in six more sites;
c) Support further dissemination activities with Sedesol for the Project in Monterrey (Simeprode).
The process consists of extracting the methane from the landfills using pipes and vacuum pumps. The gas is forced into gas cleaning devices and burned in gas engines that use the chemical energy of the methane to move a generator The electricity is transformed to the grid voltage and transmitted to the final users.
The DCF will purchase the first one million CERs generated by this project.
