Tunisia: Gas Recovery and Flaring for Nine Landfills
(Italian Carbon Fund)
UNFCCC Reference No.: 0586
1 Project Documents
The purpose of the project is to implement an efficient gas recovery and flaring system in nine landfills throughout Tunisia. The landfills receive the municipal waste originating from nine of the main cities in Tunisia and have an overall nominal capacity of 1.2 million tons of waste per year. None of the landfills has been designed with any landfill gas (LFG) collection infrastructure incorporated.
With the quantities of waste generated, and given the expected waste composition and decomposing conditions, it is expected that the landfills will emit a total of 4,000 tons of methane in 2007 and that emissions will grow progressively up to a maximum of 41,000 tons of by 2013. After implementation, the gas collection network will maximize the LFG flaring potential, leading to a substantial lowering of methane emissions by the landfills through 2015.
