Philippines: Laguna De Bay Watershed Project
(Community Development Carbon Fund)
The proposed project will purchase emission reduction credits from small-scale waste management projects in the Laguna de Bay Region. A growing population and weak environmental governance have led to pollution, ecosystem degradation and depletion of natural resources in the Philippines. Growing quantities of wastewater from industrial, domestic and agricultural users is disposed untreated in waterways which is degrading water resources and spreading water-borne disease.
The project plans to implent a series of small-scale waste management sub-projects that will improve waste management practices in the region while reducing the emission of the greenhouse gas methane (CH4) which is produced during the uncontrolled degradation of waste in disposal sites, polluted waterways and certain types of wastewater treatment plants. These sub-projects will include waste technologies that avoid methane emissions (composting and aerobic wastewater treatment) and those that recover methane (landfill gas collection and wastewater biogas systems).
The CDCF plans to purchase emission reductions at an estimated volume of 344,000 tons of tCO2 equivalent over a period of 10 years.
