Mexico Project will Deliver Greenhouse Gas Reductions and Improved Solid Waste Management Practice

Mexico City, MEXICO, March 18, 2003—Mexico became a participant in the growing carbon market today with the signing of its first emission reductions purchase agreement under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) of the Kyoto Protocol. This is a carbon finance project that will more than double the installed landfill gas-fueled power capacity in Mexico. It is also the first landfill gas project that invests a portion of the carbon reduction revenues in improvements at the landfills and provides support for renewable off-the grid energy to an un-served rural village.
