The Djebel Chekir Landfill is the only landfill that receives the municipal waste of the Tunisian capital, Tunis. It has a capacity of 700,000 tonnes of waste per year and, according to the preliminary calculations, is currently emitting around 25,000 tonnes of methane per year; emissions are expected to grow progressively up to a maximum of 37,000 tonnes in 2010.
The purpose of the project is to implement an efficient gas recovery and flaring system in the landfill. It will install and operate a gas collection network over the whole landfill area and maximize the landfill gas (LFG) flaring potential. The design of the system and the current operating conditions of Jebel Chakir are inappropriate for any LFG collection and destruction. After implementation, the project will lead to a substantial lowering of methane emissions by the landfill through 2015.
